Wout Lohle
BSc-student Applied Earth Sciences

Why did you choose Applied Earth Sciences?
In secondary school my main interest was geology, how the earth works and how the climate helped shape the planet’s surface. I had been looking at a number of different study programmes in Utrecht, Wageningen and Amsterdam, but what I liked about Applied Earth Sciences here in Delft as opposed to Geology in Utrecht was that you not only learned about what can be found below the earth’s surface, but also how to best extract these minerals and which techniques you need to do so. It was, in other words, the combination of research and application that attracted me.

Passions
Rowing and playing tennis, I have been playing tennis for over 10 years now. When I went to university I decided to do something different. So I joined a rowing club and that quickly escalated because I row 6 days a week now. I also like going to parties or festivals.

Challenges
The biggest challenge at the moment is combining my passions with my study. I like to row a lot, but I also have to find time to study. Learning how to schedule things so you can go to a party even though you have an exam next week and also want train for an upcoming race, is the biggest challenge I still have at the moment.

What would you like to become?
That changes quite often and actually I don’t know yet. First of all, I want to finish my bachelor and decide what kind of master I would like to do. If I find a job I would like to find one abroad. I’ve always enjoyed visiting different places and encountering different cultures.

Fun to know
The first 8 years of my life were spent in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. I suppose this is where my desire to live abroad comes from.

Meet me
You can meet me at 'Student for a day' or the Open Days, which I will attend.
