The vision
Everything starts with movement. From the moment we enter this world, we crawl, pull and step forward to forge our path through life. We explore the world. We transport our goods. We look to join the ranks of the upwardly mobile.
In every possible aspect of life, we can find relations of mobilities. TU Delft Mobility|Society understands and explores society as a sum of mobility relations. We believe that mobility has and always will play a fundamental role in societal development, influencing social structures and relations. We believe that by looking at the world through ‘mobility lenses’ we can better understand society as a sum of mobility relations and create important opportunities for addressing societal challenges in the future. This allows us to interact with the future of society - however gigantic it may be - through the sum of mobilities that act at a human scale.
The mission
We look at the Mobility | Society Initiative as a 'movement'; a starting point for introducing a new school for thoughts for mobility.
Mobility|Society is a movement that seeks to re-think and explore mobility’s relationship with society, in order to steer towards a future that is an intended consequence of mobilities, consciously set in motion. As an initiative of Delft Technical University Faculty of Design Engineering, the Mobility|Society initiative strives to develop innovative solutions and embraces the mission to create impact for a better society.
This movement brings together designers, philosophers, engineers, economists, activists, industry professionals and other thought leaders in the field of mobility. Together we can understand the role and potential of mobility for the betterment of all, including through strategies, policies, and processes that can lead us up that path.
In a world of perpetual motion, we invite you to stop and think. Put on the brakes, and pause for thought. Join us in re-examining society's relationship with mobility and let's unleash the potential of mobility.
TU Delft moving mobility forward
TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering aims to move forward design research in the field of mobility. The Mobility | Society initiative offers a platform for a new conversation. As designers looking at a complex future, we ask what role will mobility play in defining the way we move as society? In theory and practice.
At Delft University of Technology, we recognise that climate change, economic growth and urbanisation bring with them social challenges. TU Delft is working on innovative solutions for liveable, accessible and resilient cities with the aim of maintaining or creating an attractive and safe living environment for residents of (delta) regions at home and abroad. An integrated approach to infrastructure, water safety, smart mobility and the natural and built environment offers the best guarantee for finding answers to the challenges. Mobility | Society finds its roots in the deep knowledge that TU Delft researchers have to offer.
