Job description
The Process and Energy Department (P&E) of the Faculty Mechanical Engineering, coordinates the education and research activities in fluid mechanics, energy, and process intensification at Delft University of Technology. The P&E Department aims to enable the energy transition by educating future (mechanical) engineers and by developing novel processes and equipment for the production and consumption of synthetic fuels, chemicals and materials. We perform outstanding research in the fundamentals (thermodynamics and fluid dynamics) and in technologies (energy technology and storage, process intensification and multiphase systems). The department is investing heavily in the field of energy conversion and storage and this position is one of the key investments in boosting this field further. The candidate will make use of the existing laboratories of the P&E department, and will share the experimental infrastructure with the other groups of P&E. A significant portion of our primary energy is wasted as heat. This project looks into recovering that waste heat, storing it using thermochemical materials, and using it to run sorption chillers.
Requirements
Profound knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, numerical modelling, and fluid mechanics is essential. Experience with experimental (measurement) techniques as well as numerical ones (CFD-DEM, FE, MD and MC) is desirable

Conditions of employment
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year. Porous gas diffusion electrodes greatly improve many electrochemical conversion processes, but little is known about what goes on within the pores. Will you be the one to answer this question?
Job description
Electrochemical CO2 conversion into useful chemicals holds great promise to mitigate climate change. This electrochemical process requires the catalyst to be in contact with water, but the water at the same time hinders rapid transport of CO2 to the catalyst surface, due to the low CO2 solubility and diffusivity in water. So-called gas diffusion electrodes largely overcome this issue by supplying CO2 gas directly to the vicinity of the catalyst particles through a dedicated gas transport medium. However, the pores in this medium tend to flood with water, once again hindering gas transport.
Designing gas diffusion electrodes and the operating conditions of the conversion process in such a way that avoids flooding, requires detailed insight into the distribution of liquid and gas components within the porous structure, and how this distribution affects fluid transport in the pores. Such local insight within a porous electrode is experimentally inaccessible, whereas it can be obtained through simulations. The focus of this PhD project lies on modeling the distribution of liquid and gas components in a porous and chemically heterogeneous structure. You will perform multiphase lattice Boltzmann simulations, supported with experiments and using input from molecular dynamics simulations performed by another PhD candidate as part of the same project.
This four-year PhD vacancy is part of a multi-PhD NWO Vidi project that addresses the flooding problem in gas diffusion electrodes for electrochemical conversion. The project will be carried out in the research group of Dr. Remco Hartkamp at the Process & Energy Department of TU Delft. This group includes 5 PhD candidates who study fluid transport and interfacial phenomena in electrochemical systems, using a variety of techniques. As such, there is ample opportunity for collaboration within the team and with academic and industrial partners. You will also have the opportunity to perform some experiments, or be involved in them, as part of this PhD project.
Requirements
- We are looking for an excellent PhD candidate with a strong background in physics, chemical engineering, or a related discipline.
- Ideally, you are familiar with electrochemical and transport phenomena, and proficient with coding in languages such as Python or C++.
- Prior experience with lattice Boltzmann simulations will be considered a great advantage.
- Good interpersonal skills and a pro-active and creative mind-set are essential, as well as good verbal and written communication skills in English.
