The prospect of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a revolution in terms of air transportation technologies as well as enriching the multi-modal transport in large cities and metropolitan regions.
Urban Air Mobility encompasses a very broad mission range, from emergency to taxing and monitoring. All these missions have the common denominator in the shortening of the travel duration with on-demand point-to-point transport by direct air routes.
The backbone of UAM is the innovative use of eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) vehicle technology. With its unique flexibility, this technology can offer unprecedented promptness for prioritized transport and services in metropolitan areas with high traffic density, escaping the often-congested traffic at the surface.
In just the last few years, the eVTOL sector has shown impressive progress with several major companies having already reached the level of demonstrator and now racing for certification. All proposed solutions are electrically powered and with the uppermost attention to noise emissions. Therefore the respect of the environment and communities. The advancements of eVTOL technology can also be regarded as a catalyst to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation concepts for short to medium route (e.g. regional air mobility) based on electric flight.
The TU Delft Advanced Air Mobility (TA2M) group is taking part in this journey with experts from multiple disciplines: aerodynamics, propulsion and aeroacoustics; flight mechanics, control and air traffic operations; electric propulsion, power and storage; lightweight composite structures, cockpit design and more.
Our role is to establish educational platforms and scientific frameworks to work with motivated students and industry professionals.
Design and research projects are offered at BSc, MSc and PhD level, with the ultimate goal to deliver the next generation of engineers ready to work in the growing UAM sector.
The group takes the lead in promoting academic dissemination, by organizing conferences and workshops on several advanced air mobility ventures and gathering information on the latest developments in the field.
