Team

Deea Bataineh is a researcher, educator, and consultant, and is currently conducting his PhD research at IIT Institute of Design (ID). His work focuses on strategic choice-making, tackling complex spaces of innovation in areas like energy, mobility, health, and food. Through his research, he is highlighting the role of design as a catalyst for equitable, sustainable, and intelligent transformation.

Weston Baxter is an Associate Professor of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. His research focuses on developing design methods at the intersection of behavioural science and design. Since 2018 he has held a strategic role supporting doctoral design candidates. 

Paola Bertola is professor of Design at the School of Design, Politecnico di Milano. Her research focus is on design management and design driven innovation. She was the coordinator of the PhD Program in Design at Politecnico between 2017 and 2021, and she is currently the Deputy Director of the Department of Design.

Annemiek van Boeijen (PhD) works as educator, researcher, and designer in the field of Design, Culture & Society with culture-sensitive design as her central point of attention. She is employed at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology.

Rafael Calvo (PhD) (2000) is Professor at Imperial College London focusing on the design of systems that support wellbeing in areas of mental health, medicine and education, and on the ethical challenges raised by new technologies. He is co-lead (Imperial) of the Leverhulme Centre for the future of Intelligence, and co-editor of the IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society.

Jonathan Chapman is Professor & Director of Doctoral Studies at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design where he leads the PhD in Transition Design—a research leadership program for designers committed to making positive change in the world. Author of five influential books, including Meaningful Stuff: Design that Lasts (MIT Press, 2021), he advocates for sustainable design and consults for global entities like Puma and the United Nations.

Caterina Dastoli is a PhD in Design Research and research fellow at the Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano. Her research interests are positioned at the intersection between Design and Entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on design-driven interventions for new product development in entrepreneurial ecosystems.

Fabio Figoli is a PhD candidate at the Department of Design at Politecnico di Milano. His research delves into how designers and generative AI can seamlessly interact in the design process to design better outcomes.

Elise Hodson is a Senior Tutor in the School of Design at the Royal College of Art. Her work combines design culture and collaborative design practice with a focus on global production networks and social sustainability. She contributed to DoCS4Design while a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Design at Aalto University.

Sampsa Hyysalo is Professor of Codesign at the department of design, Aalto University. His research concerns designer–user relations in sociotechnical change and the ways by which collaboration can be orchestrated. Since 2022 he has been in charge of doctoral education at DoD in Aalto.

Guy Julier is a writer, academic and practitioner with over 30 years of professional experience observing and researching global changes in design, economics and society. He is Professor of Design Leadership and former Head of Research in the Department of Design at Aalto University.

Francesca Mattioli is a researcher at the Department of Design at Politecnico di Milano. Her research focuses on collaborative practices in design education and how they support the development of intercultural competencies. She is also studying the potential of project-based learning in design for sustainability education.

Michel Nader Sayún is a designer, MA from Aalto University, interested in how societies interact with and are affected by design. He has experience in social impact research and design projects around change in social systems and inclusivity in the design process.

Lucia Rampino is an architect and Ph.D. in Industrial Design. Her core field of research is product design, with a focus on theories of design and the nature of design processes, particularly as they pertain to innovation. She is currently leading the Doctoral Programme at Politecnico di Milano

Annalinda De Rosa is researcher at the Department of Design, Politecnico di Milano. Member of Polimi DESIS Lab of DESIS Network (Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability). Her research concerns on design-driven models for incubating innovative processes to improve social cohesion through participatory design in urban and rural areas.

Pieter Jan Stappers is professor of Design Techniques at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology. His research focuses on methods for (co) design, and Research through Design. During 2012-2020 he led IDE’s PhD Programme.

Carlos Teixeira is the Charles L. Owen Professor in Design at IIT Institute of Design (ID), where he teaches the strategic use of design capabilities in complex spaces of innovation, and organises the doctoral programme in design.  

Wilfred van der Vegte is an assistant professor working in the Knowledge and Intelligence Design section of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology. He is also the Faculty’s programme coordinator of doctoral education.
