TU Delft is the coordinator of the FLEXInet project. The objective is to develop power electronics and energy management system for hybrid energy storage systems – capable of storing both heat and electricity. This is achieved by combining batteries with flexible heat pumps and thermal storage along with the (bidirectional) charging of electric cars.

Dr Ten BV
In the past years Dr Ten has worked on new batteries, BMS, EMS and vapour heating systems. From this experiences Dr Ten will work on further research of integration of heat storage, a Battery Super Cap, a modified inverter and a hybrid system. The systems will be installed and researched in the Greenvillage and HET.

Flemish Institute for Technological Research NV (VITO)
VITO is responsible for the development of the battery degradation model which will be used with a commercially available and with the innovative Si-anode based battery which will be developed in the project. To support this VITO will perform testing of the new battery cells in its Battery Test Laboratory.

Recoy B.V.
Recoy aims to greatly improve the business case for stationary batteries by developing a battery optimization service that combines real-time electricity price forecasts with VITO’s unique degradation model. This will be tested at the GV and HET on commercially available batteries and at VITO on Leyden-Jar’s batteries with pure silicon anodes.

LeydenJar Technologies
LeydenJar Technologies has developed li-ion battery technology that enables 70% higher energy density, whilst simultaneously reducing its cost price and CO2 footprint. In the context of the Flexinet Project, LeydenJar will evaluate the application of its technology in grid scale applications, which will include ongoing development to further decrease the cost price per cycle of its battery systems through using innovative materials.

Borg
Borg is dedicated to develop a mass produced residential underground thermal energy storage system. Within Flexinet we will quantify the potential of decentralize thermal storage within a flexible energy network and develop a algorithm that determines the optimal state of charge and the control strategy considering forecasts on weather, pricing and behavior.

Heliox
Together with PRE and Delft University of Technology, Heliox is working on the FLEXGRID+ Box. This underground box integrates direct solar charging, V2G charging and battery storage technology. Heliox is focusing on the integration of the battery.

PRE power developers
PRE is developing the FLEXGRID+ Box together with Delft University of Technology and Heliox. In this underground box direct solar charging, V2G charging and battery technology are integrated to one solution. PRE also develops a multi asset controller. Besides the FLEXGRID+ Box other assets like heat storage can be read out and controlled with this multi asset controller.

DC Opportunities R&D BV
DC Opportunities will develop a power electronics converter for energy storage applications in particular for the connection with DC grids or other DC loads or sources. It can also be used for second life batteries. A prototype of a partial power converter will be designed and field tested in the Green Village.

The Green Village
The Green Village is a field lab and learning community at TU Delft Campus with focus on the urban environment where solutions on neighbourhood-, street- and building level are being tested. Several systems that will be developed during the project will be tested and validated at this location. Next to offering space for experiments we offer an open learning environment on hybrid energy storage technologies for the built environment.

HET cooperative
HET cooperative (energy cooperative Hilversum Energy transition) hosts and coordinates the second living lab in a Hilversum based neighborhood, to allow for real life testing and optimization. Aim for HET is to foster the local energy transition using optimized generation and flexible hybrid storage and EV charging and storage, including net balancing and demand control. HET will also take part in developing of earning models and in the TU Eindhoven study into the social aspects and acceptance of demand flexibility.
