[DMO] Anurag Bishnoi: Determining Ramsey numbers using finite geometry

We will look at the new breakthrough in Ramsey theory by Sam Mattheus and Jacques Verstraete that solves an 80-year-old open problem by using a random-algebraic approach. In particular, they start with a finite geometric graph and then take a random subgraph to obtain sharp lower bounds on the Ramsey number r(4, t). I will present their result, describe it's historical context and importance, and give a sketch of their argument.
