Optimisation of Interior Permanent Magnet Generator in Propeller Type Tidal Turbines

The key goal of this thesis is to design, model and optimise an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (IPMSM) in propeller tidal turbines. Initially an analytical model of the machine is constructed and then a Finite Element Method (FEM) model is built to validate it. Next, the analytical model is used for optimisation using multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA) where the three objectives are higher efficiency, lower total volume and lesser weight of magnets. Finally, the optimised model and the initial model are compared, and the results are explained.
