BK Talks: Scale matters
In transition to a Circular Built Environment
25 november 2021 18:00 t/m 20:00 - Locatie: OOSTSERRE & ONLINE - Door: Communication BK | Zet in mijn agenda
Ever since its establishment in 2017, the Circular Built Environment (CBE) Hub has adopted an approach in which circularity crosses all scales: from materials; to components and to buildings and from neighbourhoods; to cities and to regions. Transitioning to a CBE is a complex task, situated in the entanglement of each scale with technology, management, design, economy, resource flows and the dynamic relations of all stakeholders involved.
Tillmann Klein (Professor of Building Product Innovation, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft and head of the CBE Hub) will moderate a discussion about the systemic character of change for transitioning to a Circular Built Environment with a strong focus on scales. Selected guests from industry and practice will share their experiences in working at different scales. What is the most relevant scale for circularity? Is the smallest scale also the most attractive? To what extent do actions in one scale affect or are affected by others? Can production and consumption be handled locally? Can we create self-sufficient communities? How does circularity affect design and engineering education?
Moderator
Tillmann Klein
Professor of Building Product Innovation
Tillmann Klein is professor of Building Product Innovation at the Delft Technical University. He leads the Circular Built Environment Hub at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and he is editor in chief of the scientific open access ´Journal of Façade Design and Engineering´.
From 2005 until 2017 he lead the Facade Research Group at the TU Delft, Faculty of Architecture and from 2008 to 2016 he was director of the façade consulting office Imagine Envelope b.v. in Den Haag. From 2015 until 2017 he was guest professor for Design and Building Envelopes at the Technische Universität München.
Panellists
Conny Bakker
Professor of Design Methodology for Sustainability and Circular Economy
Conny Bakker is professor of Design Methodology for Sustainability and Circular Economy at TU Delft, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Her research field is the development of design methods for products that have multiple lifecycles. She explores strategies such as product lifetime extension, reuse, remanufacturing and recycling, and the business models that enable these strategies. A second research interest is the field of user centred sustainable design, which focuses on exploring the relationships between consumer behaviour, sustainability and design. Conny co-leads the European H2020 project ReCiPSS, that helps designers and manufacturers understand how collection, remanufacturing and reuse of products can lead to more profitable, resource-efficient and resilient business practices. She coordinates and teaches several courses in Sustainable Design and Design for the Circular Economy, including a popular MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) which has attracted over 50,000 learners so far.
Ellis ten Dam
Consultant | Commercial Director Buildings Royal HaskoningDHV
Ellis ten Dam is Consultant in the Built Environment and currently Commercial Director of Royal HaskoningDHV. She focusses on value for people and organisations. With this mind she develops together with stakeholders and team environments which are future proof, healthy and sustainable. She believes and strives to make better use of data, not only in developing environments but esspecially during usage to make explicite whether the expected value is really delivered by the built environment.
Ellis graduated in 1990 from the Eindhoven Technical University on the topic “The match between dynamic organisations and static real estate”. She joined a special exchange program at Cornell University in 1989 on topics of environment psychology and real estate management.
She started her carrier at EGM research. Since 1996 Ellis is part of Royal HaskoningDHV. She was always active as consultant and combined this with either line management or business development roles.
Olga Ioannou
Assistant Professor, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment
Olga Ioannou is Assistant Professor at the Architectural Engineering + Technology Department of Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft. She is also member of the CBE Hub Steering Committee with a specific focus on supporting the integration of circularity in education.
Marc Postel
Co-founder of Fairm
Fuelled by a desire to make a difference and with a strong belief that our world needs an update Marc deviated from his path to become a building engineer. In his quest for 21st century solutions he elongated his graduation from the TU Delft master of Building Technology to teach himself the basics of biotechnology, material biofabrication and took up entrepreneurship. Devoted to bringing natural materials to the masses and contribute to restoring balance in our natural and social systems he Co-founded Fairm. There he now uses the problem solving and creative skills he developed at Architecture, to build a nature and people centred company.
Paul de Ruiter
Paul de Ruiter Architects
Paul de Ruiter graduated from the Delft University of Technology in 1990, and started his doctoral dissertation, “The Chameleon Skin”, at the same university in 1992. In the dissertation, Paul argued that buildings should produce rather than consume energy. In 1994 he set up his own agency specialized in sustainable architecture; Paul de Ruiter Architects.
Since then, Paul de Ruiter has risen to prominence as an architect, entrepreneur, innovator and inspirer renowned for producing sustainable, game-changing buildings. He is a regular contributor to national and international discussions around sustainability, CO2-neutral design and certification methods for environmental performance and an active member of various organizations committed to a sustainable world like the Dutch Green Building Council.
