Advanced, network-wide coordinated traffic management could help to increase network capacity, reduce specific congestion issues, air quality issues and to manage the effects of traffic incidents as well as large scale events. Also, vehicle-vehicle communication and ‘cooperation’ can enhance capacity and reduce disturbances in the traffic flow.
Researchers at TU Delft engage in developing traffic and network models to analyse flows, ex-ante analyse the effects of various traffic management strategies and ex-post analyse traffic flows in networks in which the strategies have been implemented.
Empirical research is conducted in the Netherlands together with partners like Rijkswaterstaat and similar municipalities (Amsterdam), as well as in cities abroad.
