Lieke Brackel
Profile
Lieke has a background in political science, philosophy, and water management (Wageningen University & University of Amsterdam). She studies questions of justice in water governance and the politics of sustainability transitions. Combining academic research with policy practice and public communication is important to Lieke. Previous internships with both government institutions and NGOs in the field of water management have taught her much and she aims to keep contributing to policy practice with her research. Outside the field of water management, Lieke organized public debates and worked for the European Press Prize. In her free time, Lieke loves to sail and be near water.

PhD research: Ethics of Climate Adaptation
Lieke’s research is about finding ways to integrate the contested concept of ‘justice’ in long-term water management. She combines qualitative social science with conceptual philosophical analysis. Currently, she studies how procedural justice can be improved when people have to (in)voluntarily relocate in the name of climate adaptation measures, building upon the capability approach. Lieke also is a contributing author to the 6th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment report (Working Group II: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, CH4 Water).
