PhD & postdoc course ‘Safe by Design’ 2023
Open for PhD candidates from all universities and universities of applied science in the Netherlands. Organized by TU Delft Safety and Security Institute, together with RIVM and VU. Safety is becoming increasingly relevant in various fields, particularly in designing products and processes. The renewed focus on Safe by Design tries to identify and include safety (along with other important values such as sustainability, security and circularity) at an early stage of design. This course offers an excellent overview of the extensiveness and importance of the integral approach of Safe by Design. The team of lecturers together represent both the broad academic as the more practice-oriented approach and represent TU Delft and VU, and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in Safe by Design.

Preliminary moral reflections on Large Language Models
Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT or LaMDA are often presented as a breakthrough in AI because of their ability to write convincing texts in a matter of seconds and when presented only with a short opening sentence. In philosophy specifically, there are concerns about LLMs displacing the opportunities for critical reasoning through the act of writing and the consequent educational challenges in this regard.

Workshop ‘ValueMonitor, a tool for empirical investigations of values and value change in text corpora’
ValueMonitor is an easy-to-use tool for empirical investigations of values and value change in text corpora (e.g., scientific articles, newspaper articles). Investigations performed with ValueMonitor can be used to discover neglected moral issues voiced by societal actors or to map the current state of scientific research on specific values and technologies. The workshop is part of the ERC project ‘Design for Changing Values’ funded by the EU. It will take place on March 10th, 2023, from 9.30 to 16.30, in Delft.
