Spanish

Spanish at ITAV (2024-2025)

If you speak Spanish, you can communicate with more than 500 million people in the world! Spanish is the second most used language in international communication and is the mother tongue of 21 countries. Latin American and Spanish cultures have made significant contributions to art, music, and world literature. Students who visit a Spanish-speaking country for an internship, work, or as a tourist after following the courses will have acquired sufficient skills to handle everyday situations.

The aim of the courses is to acquire skills in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish.

Instruction language: Spanish.

We will start our courses on:

  • Monday, September 2, 2024 (Q1)
  • Monday, February 10, 2025 (Q3)

The Spanish courses are only available for TU students.

The language of instruction is Spanish. A course costs €100 for TU students.

Enrollment

nrolment via Brightspace occurs twice a year: on August 15th  for Q1 and January 13th for Q3.

Students must enrol via Brightspace (Content - "Group enrol"). Enrol in Brightspace and choose “Group” to register in the right group. After that, wait until you receive an email about the payment.

Course Contents

The student develops productive speaking and writing skills in practical situations, such as staying in Spain or Latin America as part of an educational exchange or an internship in a company or institution. Attention is also given to knowledge of Spanish culture.

Education form

The course takes place twice a year and covers 2 quarters: from September to December and from February to May. The course normally consists of 12 tutorials (including 1 for examination) once a week on campus. The course requires considerable self-study. You should account for at least 4 or 5 hours of self-study per week, in addition to weekly tutorials. If this is your first Romance language, expect to spend at least 7 or 8 hours on self-study per week.

The course is given on the basis of a reader: Each week, you prepare a chapter of the reader through self-study by studying the theory of grammar and the new words of each chapter.

Compulsory literature

Reader. A dictionary is strongly recommended. All students are required to have the printed reader and a dictionary for the tutorials.

Method of testing

Continuous evaluation. The final grade will be announced via Brightspace and determined by the weighted average of the oral test, a written test, and 3 other tests. To pass, students must be present and actively involved in at least 80% of the classes and must pass the different assessment activities with an average minimum grade of 6. (Grades 5.8 or 5.9 are not considered passing) = 4 ECTS. (Granting of ECTS is under the judgment of the faculty to which students have been applied).

It's also possible to receive a certificate with a minimum of 6.7 (unrounded), 80% attendance, and no insufficient grades in any of the different assessment activities (at least a 6 in all activities is required for a certificate).

Further information about the evaluation and oral test is given during the first class and through Brightspace.

Abandonment

  • If a student decides to stop the course (for any reason) after it has started, there is no refund, and they cannot retake the course in another semester. They will still receive a grade in Osiris = NV (Niet Verschenen - Not Attending), even if the student decides not to come to class the first week.
  • If a student starts the continuous evaluation (even with only 1 test), they will receive a final average mark in Osiris at the end of the semester. It’s mandatory.
  • If a student wants to improve their grade, they need to take the final exam at the end of the semester.
