Profile

Julia Barashkov(a), PhD candidate at Delft University of Technology

Specialisation: Re-commoning urban governance through digital data urbanism

Bio: I'm Julia Barashkov(a), and as of April 2024, I am pursuing my PhD at TU Delft, under the guidance of Prof.dr.ir. Marijn Janssen and Dr.ir. Zenlin Roosenboom-Kwee. My research focuses on bottom-up digital urban governance and how participatory strategies and self-organisation around complementary currencies reshape local economies.

I earned my Bachelor of Architecture from The David Azrieli School of Architecture at Tel Aviv University, followed by a Master of Architecture from Wismar University of Applied Sciences: Technology, Business and Design, in collaboration with HafenCity University Hamburg — University of the Built Environment and Metropolitan Development.

My professional and academic background is in digital and cognitive urbanism and the effects of digital spaces and urban environments. I specialise in developing urban organisation concepts from a bottom-up perspective, emphasising parametric and systematic design patterns, and the impacts of mass customisation on the design process. During my time as a practicing architect in a leading architecture firm, I contributed to several award-winning cognitive urban master plan proposals.

At TU Delft, my research aims to further explore how digital governance models can integrate quantifiable factors with real-world urban and social challenges. My goal is to contribute to the development of smart, resilient cities that respond adaptively to the needs and aspirations of their communities.
