Transport & Planning
Transportation and mobility are crucial aspects of modern societies. They enable us to get to school and work, access essential goods and services, stimulate economic growth, and build social relationships. However, along with these benefits, come negative consequences like pollution, traffic jams, accidents, and extensive land use. How can we make the most of transportation’s advantages while minimising its downsides? It is this question that is at the heart of our work at the Transport & Planning Department, which is part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft. Our research covers topics such as urbanisation and smart sustainable transport, climate-friendly transportation and resilience. But also things like well-being, health, equity, and digitisation in transport. In order to tackle the methodological and technical challenges, we emphasise computational modelling and analysis for transportation engineering. This involves using techniques like sensing, monitoring, data analysis, modelling, simulation, and artificial intelligence to solve problems in transportation engineering and design effective systems. Research Labs Our collaborative labs are at the heart of our research efforts. These labs, led by one or two (assistant, associate, or full) professors, work closely with both public and private entities in the field. This collaboration bridges the gap between theoretical research and practical application. Educational Courses In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, we also offer transport and planning courses in the Bachelor’s programme for Civil Engineering. We provide a dedicated Transport & Planning track in the Master’s programme for Civil Engineering, and we actively participate in the interdisciplinary Master’s programme focused on Transport Infrastructure and Logistics. BSc Civil Engineering MSc Civil Engineering MSc Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics Science Day 2024 Last Thursday we held our annual Science Day. Visitors of all age had the chance to experience a wide variety of free activites based on the various research topics here at TU Delft including our own department of Transport and Plannning. From workshops to educational games we were able to showcase our research in a fun yet accessible way to the civil engineers of tomorrow! Giving Freight a Voice Smart and sustainable, that is where freight transport should be headed, according to Mahnam Saeednia. Letting goods themselves determine how they will get to their destination is just one of the innovative ideas she is trying to put into practice. “I see goods as individuals who have to collaborate to reach their goals.” This forward-thinking approach aims to redefine how freight logistics operate, with trains being a key component of this new, efficient system. Rector Magnificus visits the MXR Lab Tim van der Hagen, the rector magnificus of TU Delft went to visit our Mobility in Extended Reality (MXR) Lab where he met with Dr.ir. Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser and Dr.ir Yan Feng and got to experience the work being done there firsthand. (English subtitled) Urbanism Next Conference 2024 From October 9 - 11 the Urbansim Next Europe 2024 conference will be held in Amsterdam. Join us as we explore the impacts emerging technologies are having and will continue to have on cities, regions and communities. A Better Bus Dr Niels van Oort talks about the untapped potential of busses when it come to tackling the transport issues of today's society. (in Dutch) Bus Driver for a Day Students taking the course Public Transport System and Supply Planning and Operations by Niels van Oort came up with an innovative way to improve bus transport. As a reward they were given the chance to take a seat behind the wheel of a real bus and see how their theory would work in real life.
