Protestival - Informative lectures and workshops on protesting

22 November 2024 19:00 till 22:30 - By: Communication | Add to my calendar

The freedom to protest is one of the most important rights we have in the Netherlands. It has also been a hot topic in recent years. Protestival will offer you multiple workshops and lectures that will dive deeper into the topic of demonstration, polarisation, and how to be part of a non-violent demonstration.

Come and learn about your rights and this important part of our society! And as a cherry on top, a free drink will be included.

Protestival will consist of multiple events to choose from as participant.

The event starts off with a lecture from Abel Streefland, the TU Delft historian, about the history of demonstration and protest at the TU Delft. He will discuss the reasons behind certain protests, what has happened because of them, and will give us a deeper understanding of why protesting is such a diverse and important right.

After this plenary, there will be multiple lectures and workshops for you to choose from:

1. Moral Deliberation - a workshop by Julien Topal and the Diversity and Inclusivity Office of the TU Delft

Moral deliberation is a method to come to a justified moral judgement on one or more difficult questions within a group of people. This workshop will explain how the TU Delft has used this method in the past with respect to knowledge, security and cooperation with the fossil fuel industry, and how the TU intends to use it in the future. We will also walk you through the different steps of this method though the use of an example case.

2. Shortened Action - a training by Extinction Rebellion Delft
Activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) will give you a shortened version of their action training, the training they usually ask everyone who participates in their actions to take. You will learn about the how and why of non-violent civil disobedience, its legal consequences, and what it is like to join an XR action. Extinction Rebellion is present at this event to share their knowledge on civil disobedience, not to proclaim their own ideas.

3. Polarization framework: the dynamics of us-versus-them thinking -  a workshop by Natasha Viering from the TU Delft Communication department

Do you want to know how polarisation works, and how to handle it around difficult topics? Join this workshop for a new perspective on Bart Brandsma's polarisation framework. Polarisation itself is not right or wrong: it is human nature. We live with contradictions; Religious versus non-believer, foreigner versus native, 010 versus 020…  The list is endless. But whether it's civil war or a struggle between family members, the dynamics of polarisation are universal. Natasha Viering from TU Delft Communication will teach you how to handle polarisation around difficult topics, and how to communicate effectively in a polarised environment.

To end this informative evening, you can sit back and enjoy a more artistic approach to the topic of polarisation through dance. The tap dance duo Tappin-It Collective will entertain us with their brand-new performance: GAMBIT. A contemporary tap dance pas-de-deux between two extreme opposites, who will meet on a black-and-white checkered dance floor.

Also present at Protestival are representatives from other organizations active in the field of protest. They are available to discuss key principles and answer any questions you might have, so feel free to speak with them if you're interested!

The entry price includes a free drink as well!
