Open Science Community initiative Rbanism wraps up the year with a community event
OSC Delft’s Rbanism initiative wrapped up the year last month with a community event and workshop at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment where they previewed their new website and visual identity.
The Rbanism community, initiated by a group of users of the R open-source programming language at TU Delft’s department of Urbanism, has the goal of promoting the effective use of open-source software, open data and open-science practices, specifically showcasing the advantages of reproducibility, automation and scalability in the field of urbanism.
According to Rbanism co-founder, assistant professor Claudiu Forgaci, Urbanism research is “challenged by a limited awareness of state-of-the-art digital technologies, as well as a scarcity of scientific computing, data science, computational thinking and software management skills and methods.”
Rbanism aims to tackle this limitation, and grow into a national and international community dedicated to advancing innovation in urbanism and empowering researchers, students, educators and practitioners. They do this by hosting free workshops and coaching events as well as providing various free tools and guides on their website.
At the event the Rbanism team recapped the events of the previous year, which included workshops centred around the pillars of scalability, automation and reproducibility.
Designer Federica Labattaglia informed us about the creative decisions behind their new visual identity and logo, and showed a preview of their upcoming website.
The Rbanism team then discussed their own ideas to grow the community, such as their new instagram account, and handed out free T-shirts with their new logo!
Lastly, after some delectable desserts, attendees came together to help forge a path in the coming year, becoming the architects of their own destiny. They brainstormed -collaboratively- about the future of Rbanism, in terms of the resources produced and shared, communication, vision, governance and community management.
Special thanks to the Rbanism community managers who made this event possible!
**The Rbanism community works with the Netherlands eScience Centre and is funded by Open Science Community Delft and the Department of Urbanism. They also work closely with TU Delft Digital Competence Center, TU Delft Library Research Data Services, and the TU Delft R Café.
