At the end of secondary school, I visited in many open days as well as student-for-a-day events to figure out which one of the interesting subjects in secondary school I would want to pursue in the future. It did not take me long to figure out that Physics or Biology wasn’t the “complete package” for me. In any of these studies, I missed the other discipline, which is why I started looking at interdisciplinary programs, like Nanobiology. What intrigued me, is the fact that it’s a very young field with a vast amount of potential. Since the programme is 100% in English, it has a very international touch to it, making sure you learn all jargon in the same language, so that confusion is minimalised. Coming into contact with two different universities broadens your horizon in its own way, because you see completely different research groups.
My favorite aspect of Nanobiology is programming, even though I struggle with it, I’m positive that I will get better at it! During my final secondary school project, I was introduced to NMR, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, which is a very interesting method of visualising molecular structures. In Nanobiology you’ll get acquainted with many other interesting research techniques which you can apply in the lab!
In the future I see myself working with modern and groundbreaking technology like branches of artificial intelligence used in companies. Primarily I want to be able to use the knowledge I have gained in the programme in many disciplines. Maybe visualising viral structures to make sure Corona crises won’t happen again.
Because our programme is completely in English, there’s a relatively high number of international students in Nanobiology, making sure you get to know many different people with completely different backgrounds. As we’re only a small study, with a hundred students a year, you really get to know your fellow students well. Fun fact: the introduction weekend of Nanobiology has the highest attendance rate of all introduction weekends at TU Delft. We are not only a very interesting and international group of students, but also very close-knit and fun!
