Celebrate the Lunar New Year with X and the Chinese Student Association through a unique series of cultural creative workshops and hands-on activities! From bracelet-making to ceramic painting and Chinese origami, each workshop is designed to immerse you in the festive spirit while learning about traditional symbols and techniques. Join us for a night of creativity, cultural discovery and connection!
The Lunar New Year event is a vibrant series of creative workshops designed to immerse you in cultural crafts and hands-on activities, all while exploring the rich traditions of this festive season. To help us understand these traditions, the Chinese Student Association will share their knowledge and perspective on this age-old festival. As a national organisation, CSA aims to bring multiple cultures and talents together, creating a social, cultural and educational environment.
We will explore each workshop in multiple groups. Each group will start with a different workshop that will last for 1 hour, giving you the opportunity to experience all activities and discover a variety of creative expressions tied to the Lunar New Year from a Chinese perspective.
Bracelet-making
The bracelet-making workshop will teach you how to use cords, beads and charms to craft a unique personal accessory. This workshop allows you to unwind while making something completely your own, and maybe making some new connections as you go!
Ceramic painting
The ceramic painting workshop will focus on decorating your own Chinese tea cup with ceramic paints, which will be provided by X. In this hands-on session, you’ll have the freedom to paint your piece with motifs such as cherry blossoms, dragons, and other symbols. A true test to exploring your own creativity.
Origami
The art of paper folding was also practised in China in the middle ages, where they called it zhezhi. This workshop will guide you through origami in different cultures using colourful papers. You'll learn to create festive shapes and objects that hold special meaning during the Lunar New Year.
Each workshop will incorporate cultural context, giving you a deeper understanding of the history and significance of the crafts you are creating. By the end of the day, you will have experienced a variety of activities that bring the spirit of the Lunar New Year to life. Plus, you get to leave with your newly created pieces and new cultural knowledge to cherish. The ticket price also includes one soft drink with discount for participants.
