Keti Koti: the flavour of freedom
29 June 2024 16:00 till 22:00 - Location: Foyer bij X TU Delft - By: Communication | Add to my calendar
On 1 July it’s Keti Koti, the day that we commemorate the abolition of Dutch transatlantic slave trade in July 1873. Keti Koti means ‘broken chains’ in Surinamese. In co-creation with SUBEST Delft (Surinamese association), Studium Generale and KIP Republic (founder of Free Heri Heri For All) we are hosting a festive event prior to the official celebrations. We invite you to learn more about the history and celebrate freedom with a special meal, good conversations and lovely company!
In remembrance of history and the enslaved we organize The Flavour of Freedom: Keti Koti. Join us for a special meal and engage in meaningful conversations while you learn all about Keti Koti.
Heri Heri is a dish that dates back to the time of slavery in Suriname. Many enslaved people grew vegetables, fished and kept chickens. As a result, they often had only a few ingredients at their disposal: such as cassava, sweet potato and purple tuber, bananas, eggs and salted fish. From these ingredients, the dish Heri Heri was born. Only recognized as a true dish after the abolition of slavery, Heri Heri now stands for resilience and survival.
After cooking the dish, we will share the food with all those invited to celebrate Keti Koti with us. There will be an introduction and short talk about Keti Koti, the slave trade, Suriname (the Dutch Caribbean) and the Netherlands. Then, you can continue the conversation over dinner with your table companions. We close this special event with a presentation and music.
Will you join us in celebration of freedom?
