Seminar - Making Sense of Transportation Platforms

14 January 2025 09:00 till 12:30 | Add to my calendar

On January 14th 2025, TRAIL PhD researcher Arjan de Ruijter will defend his PhD thesis “Two-Sided Dynamics in Ridesourcing Markets” at Delft University of Technology. The defence is public, and you are invited to join.

Moreover, on the occasion of this public defence as well as of the 183rd Dies Natalis of TU Delft titled “Making Sense of Mobility”, TRAIL and TU Delft have set up a seminar on transportation platforms.

Ridesourcing providers such as Uber and Lyft have transformed the taxi industry through two-sided platforms that match travellers with private car owners using real-time algorithms. This business model has varied implications for stakeholders, such as greater convenience for users, income instability for drivers, competitive and regulatory challenges for platforms, and potential effects on congestion and emissions for communities. Limited public access to proprietary data hinders a comprehensive understanding of the complex supply-demand dynamics shaped by these systems. Similar challenges arise in freight platforms, connecting stakeholders like transport operators and shippers. Robust models need to be developed to inform policies that are essential to address the societal, economic, and environmental impacts of these platforms effectively.
