Y. (Yask) Kulshreshtha
Profile
Yask Kulshreshtha is a Ph.D candidate in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. He is carrying out multidisciplinary research in the section of Materials & Environment (CiTG), Geo-Engineering (CitG), Architecture (BK) and Environmental Biotechnology (AS). His research focuses on Building affordable and durable earthen houses using local bio-resources.
Yask completed his MSc in Civil Engineering with Honours from TU Delft, Netherlands. He holds a (B.E) Bachelors of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Birla Vishwakarma Mahavidyala (BVM), Vallabh Vidyanagar, Gujarat, India.
Research
The government of India has identified a need for 29.5 million houses for low-income rural households by 2022. The rise in cost of cement and fired brick is disproportionate to the growth in income. Therefore, locally available material such as earth can be reconsidered for building affordable houses. Construction with earth is affordable and environmental friendly but limitations such as low societal image, poor resistance to rain water and susceptibility to termite attack are the main reasons behind its declining popularity. The use of bio-polymers extracted from agricultural and animal waste to manufacture water-resistant stabilised earthen bricks of good durability and sufficient strength is proposed in our research. The durability issue will also be tackled by appropriate design of the housing unit.
