Street, Houses and Gardens
Jenny Fang
This book unfolds and unlocks a residential street in Rotterdam as an assemblage of people, places, structures and materials. It locates architecture in the flows, rhythms, cycles and seasons of human and natural life. The living city is in the stories of buildings, the flows of human life, the episodes of urban places, and the ecology of non-human species. The living matter of architecture and the city is explored through experimental methods of notation, analysis and visualization. Based on interviews and site visits, this project explores the gradients of spaces in the movement from the public realm of the park and the street and the private areas of the house and the garden. You can enter the book on two sides. One side displays the public appearance of the houses, the back side reveals the private spaces. The book allows you to move in and out and around architecture. It reads, de-codes and visualizes the living city into a moving and foldable story.
