Reimagining collective memories: Integrating cultural heritage in a community-based transformation of an abandoned industrial heritage site
Abandoned industrial heritage sites often carry a collective memory tied to their surroundings, such as the Kloos & Zonen waterfront in Alblasserdam, known for its positive impact on its workers and its surroundings. However, this collective memory is frequently overshadowed by the sites’ industrial achievements or aesthetics, risking the loss of intangible cultural heritage if neglected.
The project adds a new, liveable neighbourhood on the waterfront and the village of Alblasserdam with a mixed-use programme, repurposing the abandoned industrial halls to serve as a communal gathering space, integrating cultural heritage and reviving the sense of community. The project emphasizes the importance of integrating cultural heritage into new developments. By uncovering the site’s historical impact and using these insights to inspire design solutions, the project aims to honour its past while addressing present and future needs. Oral histories from former workers reveal the site’s role in fostering pride, care and community.
