Bio-based Binders for Rammed Earth Construction: Experimental research exploring the use of historic binders for future material implementation
The manufacturing of bio-based construction materials produces less emissions compared to traditional alternatives. This research explores the use of bio-based binders in rammed-earth construction. These binders aim to sustainably enhance the structural capacity and weather resistance of rammed earth in Northwestern Europe. Additionally, implementing bio-based binders allows the material to either be reused or bio-degraded after demolition.
Historical data was gathered to comprise an overview of potential bio-based binders for raw earth construction. A criteria matrix was constructed to select the most promising, locally available binders. By designing and executing experimental research, the potential of granulated beet sugar (2%, 5%) and chicken egg albumen (5% liquid, 1.25% dehydrated) as binders in rammed-earth construction was explored.
The findings from the sample testing suggest that dehydrated albumen performs similarly to cement, which is commonly used, for the improvement of rammed earth. Further research is required to implement these findings in the built environment.
