Architecture and Dwelling Design for care
Transitional architecture for intellectually disabled youth: From formal education towards autonomous living
Families of young people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (YAIDD) reported that poor safety, inadequate social skills training and the unreadiness of the parents delay YAIDD from becoming autonomous adults. Through extensive research, including literature study, fieldwork and interviews, the aim of this project is to enhance the independence, social participation and well-being of the target group. The project proposes a transformative design for a Youth Development Hub in Laakkwartier, the Netherlands, utilising a former school building. The provided facilities include short-stay residences, classrooms, a community centre and recreational areas to cater to YAIDD needs. The core design concepts include territoriality and control, privacy and choice, and design for the senses, thereby creating an inclusive and stimulating environment. Ultimately, the hub aims to become a local landmark, fostering inclusivity and empowering young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead autonomous lives.
