Lucy Carpet House was designed by Rural Studio for the Harris Family in the impoverished Alabama cotton belt in the southern U.S.A. Interface, a large international carpet manufacturer, sponsored the project with a special donation of 72.000 redundant carpet tiles. Rural Studio rethought the function of these carpet tiles as a  material to construct the walls. Individually stacked tiles are compressed and held together by a heavy wooden ring beam. The carpet walls are protected from water by an exaggerated roof overhang, drawing on the rural vernacular language that characterises homes in the southern region.
