Where are the skyscrapers in the Netherlands?
We have quite a housing problem to solve in the Netherlands. How is it possible we don’t have packed metropolises with skyscrapers? And will that change in the future? University of the Netherlands travelled to Rotterdam with senior lecturer in area development Tom Daamen to delve into this.
The Netherlands is the most populous country in the EU (leaving aside the island of Malta). However, anyone who flies over the Netherlands does not see packed metropolises with gigantic residential towers, such as in Hong Kong or New York. On the contrary, except for Rotterdam, we hardly have any skyscrapers in our country.
Universiteit van Nederland with Tom Daamen seeks answers to questions like: do Dutch people want to live in skyscrapers and why the Dutch don’t join the high-rise hype. Some of the reasons might be that we have ‘soft ground’ and that high-rise buildings are very expensive.
