Jeroen van den Hoven at the Responsible Innovation in Defence and Security Conference
Jeroen van den Hoven took part in a round table discussion at the Responsible Innovation in Defence and Security Conference that took place between the 27th and 28th of November in Brussels. The conference, co-organized by BENELUX and NATO, aimed to align technology development with shared values and international law in defence and security. Van den Hoven’s contribution highlighted the need for an ongoing commitment to responsible innovation and the importance of ‘design for moral values’ approach in this domain. This allows us to close the gap between principles on the one hand and requirements engineering and engineering design on the other hand. This is key to accountability and trust in the application of advanced AI in the Military.
The dialogue centered on NATO's commitment to responsible AI deployment, emphasizing the six Principles of Responsible Use endorsed by Allied Defence Ministers. Insights were shared on n how these principles are put into practice through the distinctive governance structure of NATO's Data and AI Review Board, which includes representatives from various sectors.
