Jonas Lechner is Best Graduate of TPM 2022
Jonas Lechner is Best Graduate of TPM 2022! He now competes for the TU Delft Best Graduate award with his thesis 'Role of household climate change adaptation in reducing coastal flood risk: the case of Shanghai’. On 22 November the eight brand new engineers from the faculties presented their excellent graduation theses during the TU Delft Best Graduate Award Ceremony 2022.
Climate change greatly increases the risk of flooding. For his master’s thesis, Jonas Lechner used a smart model to study the role households can play in reducing flood risks in coastal cities. It turns out they can play a big role. His research earned him the title of Best Graduate of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management.
Supervisor Tatiana Filatova: “Jonas’s thesis employs a novel combination of data analysis and simulation methods to address a societal challenge like climate change. His ability to use the skills acquired at the master programme CoSEM to study how private adaptation to adversities of climate change may help reduce damages in one of the Global South countries makes it also one of the finest examples of the educational pillar of the Delft Climate Action Program. Jonas was very proactive, independent and demonstrated his superb critical thinking in all the design choices for his Masters. The thesis that he has delivered is the best showcase of high-quality research and education at TPM of the year 2022.”
Story of Science: Staying dry thanks to government and the public
Climate change is developing so rapidly that dykes and other large-scale flood defences no longer provide adequate flood protection everywhere at all times. To stay dry, we need to find a broader set of measures. One way of doing this is to involve the public in bringing about solutions, says Jonas Lechner, student Complex Systems Engineering and Management.
