Crate Chair on Loan

 

The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment holds a number of original Rietveld chairs in the Chair Collection. One of these, a Rietveld Crate Chair has been on loan to the Design Museum Gent since the opening of the exhibition ‘Maarten van Severen & Co. A Wild Thing’ in 2015. The exhibition has recently been extended, until March 2022.

This low version of the Crate Chair was designed in 1934, during the economic depression. It was constructed out of plain pine wood, using connections requiring limited professional skill to execute and left in view, to create low-priced yet functional furniture.
