BK Talks: Scale matters. In transition to a Circular Built Environment
Ever since its establishment in 2017, the Circular Built Environment (CBE) Hub has adopted an approach in which circularity crosses all scales: from materials; to components and to buildings and from neighbourhoods; to cities and to regions. Transitioning to a CBE is a complex task, situated in the entanglement of each scale with technology, management, design, economy, resource flows and the dynamic relations of all stakeholders involved.
Tillmann Klein (Professor of Building Product Innovation, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft and head of the CBE Hub) will moderate a discussion about the systemic character of change for transitioning to a Circular Built Environment with a strong focus on scales. Selected guests from industry and practice will share their experiences in working at different scales. What is the most relevant scale for circularity? Is the smallest scale also the most attractive? To what extent do actions in one scale affect or are affected by others? Can production and consumption be handled locally? Can we create self-sufficient communities? How does circularity affect design and engineering education?
