Dr. Anton Akhmerov

Name: Anton Akhmerov

Biography: After finishing my studies in the Moscow Institute of Physics and
Technology, I moved to the group group of Carlo Beenakker in Leiden
University, where I finished my PhD cum laude in 2011. After Leiden I
went to Harvard university as a Golub postdoctoral fellow, and finally
started working in Kavli Institute in Delft in September 2013. My
research revolves around numerical simulation of quantum materials,
such as graphene or topological insulators, and recently I am
specifically focusing on designing implementation of topological
quantum computer based on Majorana fermions.

Title of talk: Towards quantum computation using classical computation

Abstract: The quantum computers are predicted to outperform conventional ones
in solving several important problems like designing new catalysts.
However in making a quantum computer protection from the environmental
noise is a crucial requirement since the quantum degrees of freedom
are much more fragile. I am going to describe topological quantum
computation that aims to solve the noise problem by designing quantum
degrees of freedom that are protected from any source of imperfection.
Focusing more on the topic of my work, I will show how numerical
simulation of quantum systems is a crucial tool in making such a
quantum computer.
