L.D. (Luuk) van der Valk, Msc

Profile

Before coming to Delft, I studied at Wageningen University, where I obtained MScs in Earth & Environment and Climate Studies. During my studies, I was mostly interested in hydrometeorological processes, especially in complex environments. For example, for my theses I studied wind-driven melt of snow patches through modelling and fieldwork, while my research internship focused on determining precipitation phase in the Himalayas using weather station data.

Research

My research focusses on opportunistic sensing of precipitation and evaporation with a single experimental set-up. Using microwave links, also applied in telecommunication networks, both of these processes can potentially be quantified through their attenuating and fluctuating effects on the transmitted signal. Of course, these effects are perceived as “disturbances” by, for example, network operators, but we try to turn this into valuable information through estimating these hydrometeorological fluxes.

  • Project title: Measurement of precipitation and evaporation with a single experimental set-up
  • Start date project: 01-09-2021
  • Expected end date: 31-08-2025
  • Keywords research project: Precipitation, Evaporation, Hydrometeorology
  • Investigate the potential of microwave links in general and CMLs in particular for monitoring precipitation and evaporation with a single experimental set-up
