Working at our department
The department Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD) focuses on the design, mechanics, materials and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials level), to meso-scale (structures level) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems level).
3MD governs the entire life cycle from develop, design, build, maintain, operate to demolish or reuse, and has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings. The department consists of three sections: Applied Mechanics, Materials & Environment, Integral Design & Management, and the Microlab.
Testimonial Mariana Popescu
I joined 3MD as an Assistant Professor for Digital Fabrication in September 2021. My research focuses on exploring the relationship between geometry, design, fabrication, and construction. Specifically, I develop construction systems that optimize the use of materials in the design and construction of complex structures. Given the interdisciplinary nature of my research, which spans both material and structural scales, 3MD provides an ideal environment for further developing my interests.
The department encompasses a diverse range of expertise, including the study of material behaviour, the development of sustainable and alternative materials, and the modeling and application of these materials at the scale of building infrastructure. This breadth of expertise has allowed me to explore new concepts and establish new lines of research. I particularly appreciate the department's commitment to advancing the field of digitalization in construction, which has attracted a talented group of young faculty members.
Furthermore, I find the overall environment at TU Delft to be stimulating, with ample opportunities for fruitful collaboration and a culture of interdepartmental openness that facilitates easy collaboration with colleagues from all faculties. The university offers a vibrant and international setting, with a diverse and enthusiastic student body that adds to the enjoyment of both research and education.
