Toby, Stephan

Profile

I joined TU Delft as an assistant professor in 2023 after working at the Dutch research council NWO. I studied Earth science at VU University Amsterdam and the University of Bergen. My PhD (2019) at the University of Liverpool looked into the propagation and stratigraphic preservation of environmental signals in sedimentary systems. A postdoc at Indiana University focused on river delta morphodynamics and on land loss in the Mississippi delta.

Research

My research interests lie in the processes that shape sedimentary systems and stratigraphy, and the rates, magnitudes and timescales on which they take place.

I mostly focus on river deltas using physical models, numerical models and field data. Aim is to predict how deltas evolve in a changing environment and link morphodynamic processes and the stratigraphic record to geologic, climatic and anthropogenic conditions.

I am involved in several master-level courses on sedimentary systems, sedimentary geology, and field work.
