PhD Council

PhD is a party; you only need to decorate it yourself.
CEG PhD Council
PhDs make up the largest community in the CEG faculty. In the Council we represent PhDs in the decision making processes of the faculty and share experiences amongst the PhD community. The Council consists of representatives from all seven departments of CEG who meet on a biweekly basis.
PhDs can reach us to seek advice or report complaints via the shared email PhDcouncil-CEG@tudelft.nl. Alternatively, individual members can be contacted directly by using the contact details listed in the Members section below.
Goals
- We provide clarity to PhDs about general concerns of the CEG departments or changes imposed by the CEG and TU Delft Graduate Schools.
- We communicate issues, ideas and solutions to the department and faculty boards, the faculty Graduate School, the University PhD Council and the Works Council.
- We organise activities to enhance cooperation and spread knowledge within the PhD community.

Why are you in the council?
I decided to join the PhD council because I want to make a positive impact in the lives of PhD students, which are full of challenges that can bring a lot of stress. I believe that by joining the council I can help connecting the PhDs, for example via engaging activities, which should improve the overall mood. I am looking forward to constructive meetings and new ideas with all of the council.

Why are you in the council?
Pursuing a PhD is not an easy task. Apart from the fact that it challenges you intellectually, it can become an overwhelming and lonely process. Many students are studying away from their homes or they are lacking motivation. The PhD council works as a support mechanism that aims to solve all these commonalities among the PhDs. It is geared towards helping each other and I personally see it as an outlet for all the PhDs to share their concerns, fears, and complaints. That is why I wanted to be part of it.

Why are you in the council?
As a member of the PhD council, my goal is to cultivate a secure and supportive environment for all candidates. Recognizing the unique challenges inherent in each PhD journey, I am committed to actively listening to my peers and providing support where needed. Through this approach, I aim to contribute to the success and wellbeing of every individual navigating their path through their PhD procedure.

Why are you in the council?
I always think that I have been lucky enough to pursue a PhD degree in a nice and diverse environment here at TU Delft. But I have also come to realize that every PhD candidate has their unique struggles navigating the long, uncertain, and sometimes lonely journey. When we are seen as both (temporary) employees and students, ambiguity and dilemmas can arise in many aspects; when we come from different backgrounds and cultures, communication with others can feel uneasy or even daunting; when we expect to achieve a lot while time is limited, we become vulnerable to high workloads, excessive stress, and other health issues. Hence, community support is so important to us, and no matter how many, every individual needs buddies and helpers. By joining the council, I hope to become your trustworthy buddy with actively listening ears and ready-to-help hands, as well as to grow and figure out the many puzzles with you along the way.

Why are you in the council?
Doing a PhD is generally a very enjoyable experience, we get to learn a lot, we get a lot of freedom to design our own research and the TU Delft is a very social environment. However not everybody experiences the PhD like this. By joining the PhD council I hope to improve the wellbeing of my colleagues by tackling topics such as stress, mental health and diversity & inclusion. Because everybody should be able to enjoy their PhD experience.

Why are you in the council?
I am part of the PhD council because I want to work together within the faculty to improve the PhD experience for everybody. It is my goal to understand the challenges faced by different groups within the PhD community and to tackle those challenges to create a more inclusive and equal environment. Collaboration with other departments is necessary to create opportunities for PhD’s, but in this council we can also improve our own experiences by learning best and worst practices from each other.

Why are you in the council?
Guided by the principle of 'Leave a place better than you found it' my priority is to ensure that dialogue and social interaction are valued by the PhD community. Rather than being seen as a waste of time, these activities are essential for identifying issues, solving problems, and fostering development. This approach not only enhances our present workplace but also contributes to its future growth and success.

Why are you in the council?
I joined the PhD Council driven by the desire to foster positive change within our academic community. This platform allows me to represent the collective voice of fellow students, advocating for their needs and concerns. The prospect of collaboratively enhancing the quality of our research environment, promoting effective communication between peers and faculty, and organizing engaging activities to nurture a sense of community deeply resonates with me. By actively engaging in the PhD Council, I aim to contribute to shaping an inclusive and enjoyable academic journey for all.

In general, our time as a PhD is a time with multiple highlights. For example, you publish your first paper, go to conferences with your fellow PhD candidates or join PhD activities. Unfortunately, a PhD can also get quite bumpy, affecting both your work and personal life. I hope that during my time in the PhD council, we can reduce these stress factors and add some more highlights to our time as PhD candidates.
