COLLECTIEF: Deconstruct Refine Reconstruct
Despite concerns about urban saturation, The Hague municipality intends to continue building more high-rises in the Central Station District. This strategy entails dismantling current structures, which raises concerns given the enormous contribution of the construction industry towards climate change. In an attempt to accommodate more businesses and residents, the plan may exacerbate vacant spaces and disregard the requirement for a well-integrated urban environment.
In contrast, the proposed design focuses on sustainable urban development by enhancing existing buildings rather than replacing them. The approach includes adaptive reuse, extending the life and relevance of structures while addressing vacancy issues. The design incorporates voids to create open, dynamic spaces that foster communication and collaboration. By converting an existing library into a campus, the design maintains its educational role while expanding its communal and interactive functions, transforming it into a multifunctional hub for learning and social activities.
