Landscapes of Power: Reconfiguring the energy production landscape of Western Macedonia
The ‘Landscape of Power’ graduation project investigates the spatial and social dimensions of energy transition in Western Macedonia's post-mining energy territory. The paradigm shift in energy production has exposed the region to the dual pressures of the extractive landscape and the spatially blind renewable energy deployment, leading to significant spatial conflicts, ecological degradation and demographic decline. In this context, addressing these spatial and social injustices becomes imperative.
This project contends that the reconfiguration of the energy landscape necessitates a fundamental transformation in spatial, societal and governance structures to foster a regenerative, adaptive, inclusive and collaborative post-mining territory. To achieve this, the project employs an explorative scenario-based approach, integrating evaluations that inform the development of a final comprehensive territorial vision and strategy.
Through this explorative methodology and the application of justice as a primary research and design concept, the project seeks to illuminate pathways, tools and frameworks designed to empower marginalized stakeholders.
