Tiit Tammaru

From January 2018,  the faculty welcomes Tiit Tammaru as Visiting Professor. Prof. Tammaru is Professor of Urban and Population Geography and Head of the Centre for Migration and Urban Research at the Department of Geography at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He is a leading scholar on socio-economic and ethnic segregation, urban and neighbourhood change, migration, residential mobility, and housing, and is especially interested in understanding the spatial dimensions of urban poverty and migration, and associated spatial and social policy. 

During his Visiting Professorship, Prof. Tammaru will work together with his host, Prof. Maarten van Ham (OTB) with whom he shares the ambition to better understand segregation and neighbourhood effects. In recent years, they have been developing theories on segregation over the life course of individuals and the impact on neighbourhoods and cities. In 2016, Maarten van Ham en Tiit Tammaru, together with Szymon Marcińczak and Sako Musterd, published the book Socio-Economic Segregation in European Capital Cities: East meets West, which has received a lot of international academic and media attention.
