Transformation is in the past

Sense of place

Even as it transforms from a heavy industrial site, occupied by shipyards into a metropolitan district water still represents the soul of Amsterdam-Noord. Quays are a natural place where new public life could develop. Simple pontoons still testify to the industrial character of the area, and yet offer a sense of flexibility that can benefit new developments in the area.

View on Amsterdam

An industrial hall is transformed into a podium, where the canonical skyline of historical Amsterdam is on display. This change in use of a well-known architectural type is able to re-signify the connection between Amsterdam-Noord and the old city centre, via a window screen.

New industrial production

The proposal to use this hall as a technical school is another way to keep the connection to the former industrial production alive.
