Story machine

Atmosphere

Antwerp’s former harbor, ‘t Eilandje, was once the place where big ships were built and maintained; where goods were dispatched and arrived, and harbor workers roamed; the place that inspired writers to paint the dark atmosphere of the margins of the city. Now, a new phase of development has started for this area and future perspectives of ‘t Eilandje can be sketched.

Story machine

The ‘story machine’ is a circular structure with different layers: existing architectural settings, spatial interventions, temporary collective activities (such as a market, festival or exhibition) and individual human actions. Each layer depicts, on transparent sheets, four different possible situations. By combining different options for each layer, multiple scenarios can be constructed.

Follies

One of the scenarios focuses on the meeting point between water and land. A series of follies is inserted in the harbour, exploring different architectural operations on the land-water edge, such as ‘through the mass’, ‘laying over’ or ‘depth of things’.
