Poetic collage

Industry and landscape

IJmuiden, at the entrance of the Noordzee-kanaal, is dominated by large scale industries: a steel factory, a fishing harbour, a ferry, and a marina. In between ships, chimneys, sheds, and coastal artefacts, small scale leisure facilities catering to individual human activities are a hidden surprise.

Imagining

Splitting specific images in photograph and drawing is used to understand the intriguing scale-shock that characterises IJmuiden. Entering into the life of various users by means of writing is a strategy to cope with, and even dramatise the contrasts between industry and leisure.

Dual-architecture

An attempt is made to bridge the architectural language of industry and leisure at a typological level: steel pylons carry small beach cabins and other fun activities.
