Visiting the dry docks it immediatley becomes clear how important the role of water is in the area. A full dry dock contrasts to the open face of stone an empty one presents.
The act of water being pumped in and out of the dry docks is totally unique, acting like an exaggarated tide which transforms the way the area feels when you visit. This transition takes time and as it happens the sound of water is dominant, making the area feel like an island within Antwerp which is free from other noises of the city.
Creating an identity for Eilanje has to be based on the resources that are currently existing.
The main priorities in the design will be having production which meets urban needs while respecting the heritage of the docks.
The western side of this island in Eilandje contains a park area. The eastern side, where the dry docks are located, has sparse greenery. Expanding the green areas from shore to shore of the island is a priority in this project.
