Abstract
Located on a steel recycling complex made up of a cluster of industrial halls, the Production Lab learns from the identity of the site and translates the existing industrial production process to a med-tech production process. The building is composed of three halls, each having its own role in the process, while being in constant communication with the others and contributing to the whole. In the theory hall students acquire knowledge and develop ideas, which they can materialize in the prototyping hall and then test with patients and practitioners in the testing hall.
Four gestures are placed at points of intersections between the halls, momentarily breaking the rational organization of space and stimulating users to interact with each other, further encouraging communication between the three halls. The Production Lab forms part of a wider ‘culture campus’, which was adapted from existing aspirations of the city. The rules for the spatial organization of the Production Lab may be applied across the entire cluster to create a cohesive social, cultural and educational production process.
