TPM researchers extend cooperation with IT Bandung for Net Zero Emissions 2060 strategy and energy transition in Indonesia
Indonesia, a nation riding the wave of rapid economic growth, finds itself at a crucial crossroad. The pursuit of a reliable and sustainable energy supply that aligns with the Net Zero Emissions (NZE) 2060 target is paramount. TU Delft researchers are collaborating with IT Bandung in the Indonesia Regional Energy Transition TU Delft project.
Since 2020, TPM researchers professor Kornelis Blok and Jaco Quist, along with CiTG colleague Olivier Hoes, have been collaborating with a dedicated research team from IT Bandung, led by professor Harkunti Pertiwi Rayahu from ITB’s School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development in the project “Regional Energy Planning and Ideal Lifestyle of Future Indonesia - By Utilizing Green Energy Technology and Trans-disciplinary Approaches”, which is funded under the Meridan call on Renewable Energy by NWO in the Netherlands and RESTEKDIKT in Indonesia.
The project aims to develop strategic energy plans at both the national and regional level in a way that it enables economic growth while minimizing carbon emissions. The project uses Bali, Indonesia’s gateway for tourism, and Kalimantan, the proposed location of Indonesia’s new capital, as case studies.
In October 2022, the TUD team had the opportunity for in-person meetings in Bandung and Jakarta after the Covid pandemic lockdowns. These meetings included a midterm symposium at ITB and discussions with key stakeholders, such as the Indonesian utility PLN and the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta.
Looking ahead to the final year of the project, the ITB research team will visit TPM and TU Delft in October 2023. This visit will coincide with a symposium and workshop on Cooperation for the Indonesia Energy Transition on October 17th, in collaboration with Delft Global. The focus will be on research needs, collaboration, capacity development, and actionable proposals. This event is open to the public.
As part of capacity development and knowledge exchange, a group of 10 early-career researchers involved in the project will attend a summer school on the energy transition from October 9th to 20th. During this event, TPM energy transition researchers and lecturers will collaborate with renewable energy experts from other faculties and the Dutch Marine Energy Center (DMEC) in The Hague.
The ultimate goal is to sustain and expand cooperation with IT Bandung and other Indonesian universities and stakeholders, fostering a brighter and more sustainable future.
