Bijoy Bera has been awarded a TU Delft Education Fellowship for 2022-2023
Dr. Bijoy Bera, assistant professor within the Transport Phenomena group of Chemical Engineering Department, has been awarded the TU Delft Education Fellowship for the years 2022 and 2023. The Delft Education Fellowship is an initiative from the TU Delft Teaching Academy, and recognizes effort and excellence in educational innovation. Every year, up to four Education Fellows are chosen from applicants belonging to all the faculties of the university.
Each fellow is awarded a €25.000 per year grant to aid in their pursuit of implementing new and invigorating ideas in the Delft education scene. TNW Faculty has been performing very well in the Delft Education Fellowship applications with back-to-back fellows in dr. Rolf Hut (2019, 2020) and dr. Timon Idema (2020, 2021) which is now followed by a third straight successor from the faculty, Bijoy, who is the first Education Fellow from our department.
Bijoy’s interest in the context of educational innovation lies in reaching the students in a dynamic and active classroom where a student’s individual preferences and needs are taken in account. Personalization of education is mostly limited to flipped classroom approaches, but that has long proved to be insufficient.
Within this project, Bijoy will develop a series of study materials focusing different aspects of the content. E.g., certain theoretical parts of his Transport Phenomena course are best explained with the help of experiments. These parts will be taught in a lab where demonstrations of such experiments will be shown and at the same time, the students will carry out experiments themselves for hands-on experience. Once these different sets of study materials/learning activities are developed, the students will not be categorized to follow just one of them but rather, be exposed to all of them. This is thus also a method which attempts to take the students through a path of self-exploration and self-discovery ultimately leading to a complete learning experience.
