New staff member: PhD student Anne Ton
A new PhD student has started at the department of Hydraulic Engineering. Anne Ton will study the behaviour of the sandy foreshore in front of the Houtribdijk at the section of Coastal Engineering. In this news article she introduces herself.
Coastal Engineering is my area of expertise, which is not surprising since I’m from the beautiful province of Zeeland. After living in Middelburg for 18 years, I came to Delft for my BSc Civil Engineering and MSc Coastal Engineering. After working for six months at the Hydrodynamics and Morphology department at Witteveen+Bos in Rotterdam, I came back to the TU and started my PhD this January.
I will be studying the behavior of sandy foreshores in lake systems, in particular that of the Houtribdijk that is to be built between 2018 and 2020. The purpose of these sandy foreshores of the Houtribdijk is to absorb the waves from the Markermeer and IJsselmeer, protecting the dike from a 1/10.000 year storm. Sandy reinforcement of a dike in such a huge non-tidal inland water is a worldwide first. Therefore a small pilot area was created at the Houtribdijk in advance. In recent years, this has allowed specialists to study hydrodynamics, morphology and also vegetation in this area extensively. Since there are still a lot of uncertainties concerning this kind of reinforcement, I will continue and extend this research.
