At the Multi-Actor System department (MAS), we do transdisciplinary research focusing on understanding, explaining. And changing complex sociotechnical systems to address grand societal challenges, such as climate change, cybersecurity and energy transition.

Our research is based on a joint fundamental understanding of systems grounded in Governance, Policy Analysis and System Engineering & Design, supported by methodological excellence.

The department consists of a group of around 120 researchers, including PhD candidates and postdocs, with diverse research backgrounds from both the social and engineering sciences. As a department, we are convinced that challenges in complex sociotechnical systems need to be studied from multiple perspectives, including those of key stakeholders, to truly understand the intrinsic dynamics and complexities of such systems and to be able to invoke positive change in such systems.

It is estimated that some 5.5 billion people will live in highly vulnerable climate regions by 2050. However, cities are grappling with ways to think and plan for a resilient future. To become resilient to extreme climate disruptions such as flooding and droughts, cities must transform long-term urban planning. With her advisors, Dr Nazli Aydin and Prof. Tina Comes, PhD candidate Supriya Krishnan is developing "The Future Ground": a methodology for long-term urban planning under climate change.
