Hanno van Keulen
If we can show others that what we are doing works and that some people are already applying this in their teaching, then others will be more likely to follow our example. IDEE can set a good example that might initiate a movement at a wider, TUD level.
Background
Hanno van Keulen is Director of Studies of the MSc Science Education & Communication at the Faculty of Applied Sciences with a background in Chemistry. He fell in love with education early on in his career: “I gave about three months of chemistry laboratory courses and realised that this was like teaching students how to read a cookbook. Everyone can bake a cake, but this doesn’t mean that students – or the teacher! – understand why certain reactions happen, why things work the way they do.” Hanno realized that what interested him most was not necessarily chemistry itself, but the way in which you can make others understand the meaning and significance of it. This is why Hanno decided to pursue a career in education.
Towards IDEE
Throughout his career, Hanno has worked on virtually all levels of education, i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary education. Furthermore, Hanno has extensive experience in educational research and innovation in higher education, especially in the STEM disciplines. When the call for IDEE went out, Hanno saw this as a natural continuation of his efforts to improve education at TU Delft. Given his own interest in the power of language – in general, but especially within an educational setting – the theme of Future Engineering Skills attracted him most.
As part of IDEE
Hanno sees IDEE as a chance to open up the conversation on what we are doing in the field of education at TU Delft. “If we can show others that what we are doing works and that some people are already applying this in their teaching, then others will be more likely to follow our example. IDEE can set a good example that might initiate a movement at a wider, TUD level.”
